How to Check iPhone Authenticity in UAE – Complete Guide
How to Check iPhone Authenticity in UAE – Complete Guide
The UAE has a thriving second-hand iPhone market, but it also has its share of counterfeit devices, stolen phones, and grey-market imports. Whether you're buying from a store, online marketplace, or individual seller, knowing how to verify an iPhone's authenticity is essential. Here's everything you need to know.

Step 1: Check the IMEI Number
Every genuine iPhone has a unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. Here's how to find and verify it:
- Dial *#06# on the iPhone — the IMEI will appear on screen
- Go to Settings → General → About and scroll to IMEI
- Check the IMEI on the box — it must match the phone exactly
- Verify the IMEI at checkcoverage.apple.com to confirm it's a genuine Apple device
Step 2: Verify TDRA Registration
In the UAE, all mobile devices must be registered with the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). An unregistered device may stop working on UAE networks.
- Dial *#06# to get the IMEI
- Visit the TDRA website or use the TDRA app to check if the device is registered
- A TDRA-registered iPhone will work on all UAE networks (Etisalat/e& and du)
- Grey-market iPhones (imported without TDRA registration) may face network issues
Step 3: Check Apple's Coverage Page
Go to checkcoverage.apple.com and enter the IMEI or serial number. This will tell you:
- Whether the device is a genuine Apple product
- The purchase date and warranty status
- Whether AppleCare+ is active
- If the device has been reported lost or stolen (via Apple)
Step 4: Check Activation Lock Status
A locked iPhone tied to someone else's Apple ID is essentially unusable. Before buying any second-hand iPhone:
- Go to Settings → General → About — if you see the previous owner's Apple ID, walk away
- Ask the seller to sign out of iCloud before completing the purchase
- Check icloud.com/activationlock with the serial number
Step 5: Inspect the Physical Device
Counterfeit iPhones have improved dramatically but still have telltale signs:
- Weight: Genuine iPhones feel premium and solid — fakes are often lighter
- Screen quality: Apple uses OLED/Super Retina displays — fakes look washed out
- Face ID / Touch ID: These should work flawlessly on genuine devices
- App Store: A genuine iPhone runs the real iOS App Store — fakes often run Android with an iOS skin
- Ports and buttons: Check for precise fit and finish — fakes often have loose buttons
Step 6: Check Battery Health
For pre-owned iPhones, battery health is critical:
- Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging
- Look for 85% or above for good value
- Below 80% means the battery may need replacement soon
