How to Unlock iPhone for UAE Networks – Step by Step Guide
How to Unlock iPhone for UAE Networks – Step by Step Guide
Moving to Dubai or visiting the UAE with a locked iPhone? Or did you buy an iPhone abroad that won't work on UAE networks? This guide explains exactly how to unlock your iPhone for UAE networks — including e& (Etisalat) and du — and how to set up an eSIM in the UAE.
What Does "Locked" vs "Unlocked" iPhone Mean?
A locked iPhone is tied to a specific carrier (e.g., AT&T in the USA, O2 in the UK) and will only work with that carrier's SIM card. An unlocked iPhone works with any SIM card from any carrier worldwide — including UAE networks e& and du.
All iPhones sold at iPoint Dubai are fully unlocked and work on all UAE networks out of the box.
How to Check if Your iPhone is Locked or Unlocked
- Go to Settings → General → About
- Scroll down to Carrier Lock
- If it says "No SIM restrictions" — your iPhone is unlocked ✅
- If it shows a carrier name — your iPhone is locked to that carrier
Alternatively, insert a UAE SIM card (e& or du). If it works, the phone is unlocked. If it shows "SIM not supported" or "Invalid SIM", it's locked.
Method 1: Request Carrier Unlock (Official Method)
The safest and most reliable way to unlock your iPhone is through your original carrier. Here's how:
- Contact your original carrier (e.g., AT&T, Verizon, O2, Vodafone)
- Request an official carrier unlock — most carriers do this for free if your contract is complete
- You may need to provide your IMEI number (dial *#06# to find it)
- Once approved, your carrier will submit the unlock to Apple
- Connect your iPhone to iTunes/Finder and restore, or simply insert a new SIM
- Your iPhone will show "No SIM restrictions" in Settings
Processing time: Usually 1–5 business days. Some carriers charge a fee.
Method 2: Apple Unlock via Apple ID
If you bought your iPhone directly from Apple (unlocked), it should already be unlocked. Verify at checkcoverage.apple.com using your serial number.
Method 3: eSIM on UAE Networks
If your iPhone supports eSIM (iPhone XS and later), you can add a UAE eSIM without needing a physical SIM card. This is perfect for:
- Tourists who want UAE data without swapping SIMs
- Users with iPhone 17 Air or USA-version iPhones (eSIM only)
- Dual SIM users who want to keep their home SIM active
How to set up eSIM on e& (Etisalat) UAE:
- Visit any e& store in Dubai or go to etisalat.ae
- Choose a prepaid or postpaid plan with eSIM support
- Scan the QR code provided by e& on your iPhone
- Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
- Your UAE number will be active within minutes
How to set up eSIM on du UAE:
- Visit any du store or go to du.ae
- Request an eSIM plan
- Scan the QR code on your iPhone
- Activate via Settings → Cellular
Which iPhone Versions Work Best in UAE?
- Middle East version (A2896 etc.): Best — TDRA registered, all UAE bands supported
- International version: Works well on UAE networks
- USA version (eSIM only): Works via eSIM on e& and du, no physical SIM slot
- China version (dual physical SIM): Works but verify TDRA status
See our guide on TDRA registration in UAE for more details.
