iPhone Duo Touch ID vs Face ID: What You Gain and What You Lose

The iPhone Duo has no Face ID. It unlocks with a fingerprint reader built into the side button, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max keeps Face ID. With the Duo you gain an unlock method that ignores masks, sunglasses and awkward angles. You lose the effortless look-and-open habit, and your fingers need to be clean, dry and bare.

Why a foldable gets a fingerprint button

Face ID relies on a camera that sits in one fixed spot and gets a clear view of your face. A foldable bends that rule. The Duo has a 5.4-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen, and the inner screen hides its FaceTime camera under the display. The phone can be shut, fully open, or propped half open like a tiny laptop.

A button on the frame does not care about any of that. Your thumb finds it in the same place whatever shape the phone is in. Apple has not given a full explanation for its choice, so treat this as reasoning, not an official statement.

One day in Dubai, unlocked two different ways

Picture an ordinary weekday. These are everyday examples, not lab tests, and your own results will vary.

  • 7:30 am, hands just washed. You pick up the phone with damp fingers. The Duo's sensor may fail to read them, so you dry off or type your passcode. The iPhone 18 Pro Max only needs your face, so it opens straight away.
  • 9:15 am, stopped at a red light. A phone in a dashboard mount opens with a glance on the Pro Max. On the Duo, you press the side button with your thumb. Both are quick, but only one is hands-free.
  • 1:00 pm, walking outside in sunglasses. Certain sunglasses can interfere with Face ID’s infrared sensors, requiring users to remove them for facial recognition.
  • The Duo does not care what is on your face.
  • 3:00 pm, phone flat on a meeting-room table.  On the Duo, one touch of the side button does it. With Face ID you have to lean over so the camera can see you.
  • 8:00 pm, after a workout. Sweat on your fingertips can confuse a fingerprint reader. Face ID, which never touches your skin, wins this round.

What you give up with Touch ID

Hands-free unlocking. With Face ID, you look and the phone opens. With Touch ID, a finger has to reach the sensor first. It is a tiny extra step, but you take it dozens of times a day.

Reliability with wet or very dry fingers. Dubai summers are hot and humid, and air-conditioned offices are very dry. Both extremes can cause a failed read. A quick wipe usually fixes it, and your passcode is always the fallback.

Gloves. Work gloves and cycling gloves block a fingerprint completely. Face ID still works if your face is visible.

A higher security number on paper. Apple's published estimates say a random person has about a 1 in 50,000 chance of matching a Touch ID fingerprint, compared with about 1 in 1,000,000 for Face ID. Those figures assume one enrolled person. Both methods are very safe for daily use, but Face ID has the stronger rating.

What you get in return

  • It ignores your face. Masks, scarves, sunglasses and a half-hidden angle make no difference to a fingerprint.
  • It works with the phone lying down. Phones spend a lot of time on desks, car seats and kitchen counters. You can unlock one without picking it up and pointing it at yourself.
  • It sits in a predictable place. On a phone that changes shape, a physical button on the frame is an easy target. You do not need to hold the Duo at a certain angle to be recognised.
  • It is more discreet. Holding your phone up to your face on a crowded train or in a meeting can feel awkward. A quiet touch of the thumb draws less attention.
  • It is flexible. You can enrol up to five fingerprints, so you can add both thumbs and an index finger, which helps when one finger is wet or hurt.

Where Face ID still leads on the iPhone 18 Pro Max

The iPhone 18 Pro Max uses the TrueDepth system built into its 18MP Center Stage camera, sitting at the top of the 6.9-inch screen. It reads your face in the dark, through wet hands and through gloves. You glance at the screen, it unlocks instantly, and you continue what you were doing.

How safe is each method?

For most people, both are safe enough for banking apps, wallets and private photos. Apple stores fingerprint and face data on the device itself, not on iCloud, and your passcode is the backup for both. After a restart, you must type your passcode once before biometrics work again.

If you choose the Duo, these habits make Touch ID smoother:

  • Register two or three fingerprints to ensure reliable unlocking with either hand.
  • Wipe the side button now and then.
  • Re-enrol a finger if your skin becomes very dry or rough.
  • Pick a strong passcode, since you will use it as a fallback.

Pick your phone in three questions

  1. Do you often handle your phone with wet, sweaty or gloved hands? If that’s what you prefer, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be a more practical choice.
  2. Do you wear sunglasses or masks a lot, or unlock your phone while it is flat or at an angle? If yes, Touch ID on the Duo will feel natural.
  3. Is a folding screen the whole reason you are buying? If yes, the Duo's fingerprint reader is a small price to pay. If biometrics matter more than screen size, the 18 Pro Max is the safer pick.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone Duo have a Face ID?

No. It unlocks with a fingerprint sensor in the side button.

Why Does the iPhone Duo Lack Face ID?

Apple has not explained it in detail. A foldable that opens, closes and props up at different angles suits a fixed-position fingerprint button well.

Is Touch ID safe enough for banking apps?

Yes. Banking and payment apps support Touch ID, and your passcode stays as a backup. Apple rates Face ID as the stronger of the two on paper.

Which is better in hot, humid weather?

Face ID remains reliable even when exposed to sweat or moisture. Touch ID can struggle with damp fingers.

Does Touch ID work with sunglasses or a face mask?

Yes. A fingerprint reader does not look at your face, so neither makes a difference.

How many fingerprints can I register?

Up to five.

What if the fingerprint reader fails?

Dry your finger and try again, or type your passcode.
